What is an IP blacklist?
An IP blacklist (RBL for Real-time Blackhole List, or DNSBL) tracks IP addresses associated with sending spam or suspicious activity. Mail servers check these lists in real time before accepting an email: if the sender's IP is on one, the message can be rejected or classified as spam.
Why an IP gets blacklisted
Most often: a misconfigured server unknowingly relaying spam, a device infected with malware, an abnormally high volume of outgoing email, or simply inheriting a dynamic IP previously used by someone else for abusive activity.
How to get delisted
Each blacklist generally offers its own delisting procedure, available directly on its website, after fixing the underlying problem (securing a server, stopping a mass mailing...). Delisting isn't always immediate: some lists apply an observation period before confirming removal.
